The Toddler Movement Myth: Do They Move Perfectly, or Just Without Restriction?

If you’ve ever watched a toddler playing, you’ve probably noticed just how easily they seem to move.
They’ll drop into a deep squat to pick something up, stay there comfortably, stand back up and carry on as if it’s nothing.
It’s one of the reasons we often hear:
“We should all move like toddlers again.”
Or even:
“Toddlers have perfect movement.”
But from a movement science perspective, that isn’t really true.
Toddlers don't necessarily move perfectly. What they do have is something many adults gradually lose: very few movement restrictions.
Toddlers Aren’t Just Small Adults
A toddler’s musculoskeletal system is still developing, and their anatomy and biomechanics are quite different from those of an adult.
Their body proportions are different, their skeletal structure is still maturing, their feet and arches are developing, and they generally have greater joint mobility.
At the same time, their neuromuscular control, balance, coordination and strength are still developing.
You can see this when a toddler walks. They typically adopt a wider base of support, take shorter steps and use different movement strategies to help maintain their balance.
So although toddlers often demonstrate impressive mobility, that doesn't mean their movement mechanics are necessarily something an adult should try to replicate.
Their movement is appropriate for their stage of development.
So Why Can Toddlers Move So Freely?
This is where things become interesting.
Toddlers haven't yet accumulated years of repetitive postures and movement habits.
They haven't spent decades sitting at desks, commuting, driving, using computers or repeatedly performing the same activities.
Instead, they constantly expose their bodies to different positions.
They squat, crawl, kneel, reach, rotate, climb, sit on the floor and regularly move their joints through large ranges of motion.
The human body is incredibly adaptable.
When we regularly expose our joints and muscles to different movements and ranges, our bodies become accustomed to using them.
The opposite can also happen.
If certain ranges of motion are rarely used, our bodies can gradually adapt to the positions and activities we perform most frequently.
Over time, changes in muscle flexibility, joint mobility, tissue tolerance and neuromuscular control can all contribute to movement feeling more restricted.
In simple terms:
Your body adapts to the way you use it.
Mobility Is Only Part of Good Movement
Having lots of mobility isn't automatically a good thing.
For effective movement, we need an appropriate balance between mobility and stability.
Mobility gives us access to movement.
Stability and neuromuscular control allow us to control that movement.
Strength then gives us the capacity to produce and tolerate force within those ranges.
This is one of the important differences between simply being flexible and moving well.
An adult may have enough range of motion to get into a particular position but lack the strength or motor control to maintain it effectively.
Likewise, another person may be strong and well controlled but have a restriction at the ankle, hip or shoulder that changes how they perform a movement.
The body will often find another way to complete the task.
This is known as a movement compensation.
Why Movement Restrictions Matter
Movement doesn't happen at one joint in isolation.
When we walk, run, squat, reach or lift, multiple joints and muscles have to work together as part of a coordinated movement pattern.
If one area isn't providing the movement required, another area may compensate.
For example, limited ankle dorsiflexion can influence how the foot, knee and hip behave during a squat. Restricted thoracic mobility may affect how someone achieves movement through the shoulder complex.
That doesn't automatically mean there is a problem or that pain will develop.
The human body is extremely good at adapting.
But identifying significant movement restrictions can help us understand why somebody moves the way they do and where improving mobility, strength or control may give them more movement options.
Can Adults Regain Some of That Movement Freedom?
Absolutely.
The goal isn't to recreate the movement mechanics of a two-year-old.
It's to maintain or restore the movement options that allow your adult body to function well.
That might involve improving joint mobility, reducing muscular restrictions, developing strength through a greater range of motion or improving neuromuscular control.
This is why I like to approach movement progressively:
Release. Lengthen. Strengthen.
First, identify the areas that may be restricting movement.
Then work on restoring the range of motion you need.
Finally, strengthen and control that newly available movement so your body can actually use it.
The exact approach will depend on the individual because we don't all develop the same restrictions or compensations.
The Bottom Line
Toddlers don't move perfectly.
Their balance, coordination, strength and motor control are still developing.
What they do have is an impressive amount of movement freedom.
They regularly squat, crawl, rotate, reach, climb and move through positions that many adults gradually stop using.
So the goal shouldn't necessarily be to move like a toddler again.
A better goal is to combine some of that youthful movement freedom with the strength, stability and neuromuscular control of a healthy adult.
Because good movement isn't about achieving one definition of "perfect" technique.
It's about having enough mobility, strength and control to give your body options.
And the more movement options you have, the better equipped your body is to meet the demands you place on it.
